Photo Selection
What Is Photo Selection Software? The Complete Photographer's Guide
Photo selection software is where a shoot becomes a decision. It covers everything between the shutter closing and the final set: ranking and culling the raw shoot, sharing it online, collecting the client's picks, and handing an approved list to editing and album design. This guide explains each part, who it serves, and how it differs from culling tools and cloud storage.

The short answer
Photo selection software helps a photographer and their client agree on which photos from a shoot move forward. The photographer shares the shoot — usually in an online gallery — the client marks the photos they want, and the software records that choice as a locked, downloadable set. Everything after — editing, printing, album design, delivery — works from that list instead of from message threads and file names.
The four jobs inside selection
- Ranking the shoot: scoring photos for sharpness, exposure, faces and duplicates so the weak frames surface first. In Smart Photo Selection this is a 0–100 score with a readable reason on every photo.
- Culling: the photographer removes rejects — missed focus, test shots, repeats — before the client ever sees them.
- Client proofing: the client reviews the keepers in a browser gallery, marks favourites, and submits. Submission locks the set.
- Guest discovery: at events, guests find their own photos — in Smart Photo Selection through a face scan on the same gallery link.
Who uses it
- Wedding photographers: couples choose across functions, folder by folder, and the submitted set feeds the album.
- Event photographers: organisers approve coverage while hundreds of guests self-serve their photos.
- Studios: every shoot becomes its own booking with its own link, selection and download — one repeatable process.
How it differs from nearby tools
| Tool | Question it answers | Who decides |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop culling software | Which RAW files are technically usable? | The photographer, at their computer |
| Photo selection software | Which photos does the client want? | The client, in a shared gallery |
| Cloud storage | Where are the files kept? | Nobody — storage records no decision |
| Gallery-only delivery | Where can the client see photos? | The client sees, but favourites alone are not an approval |
The practical consequence: culling output (flags, star ratings) means nothing to a couple, and a shared drive still leaves the decision in chat messages. A selection gallery with a submit step is the only one of these that produces an agreed, locked list. Read the full comparison in photo selection vs photo culling.
What to look for
- Bulk upload into folders: full shoots go up organised, with background progress and retry.
- No client account needed: a link that opens in the browser, or half your clients stall.
- A real submit step: favourites are a wishlist; a locking submission is an approval.
- Selected / not-selected views: the artefacts of the conversation, plus a ZIP of the final set.
- Guest handling: face search on the same gallery for events with crowds.
- An album path: the approved set should flow into album design, not out through another export.
These criteria are worked through in detail in how to choose photo selection software, and the product side is covered on the photo selection software page.
Where selection ends
Selection ends at submission. From there the set is downloaded for editing, delivered through the gallery, or designed into an album in Album Studio. The full handover is walked through in from selected photos to finished album.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is photo selection software?
Software where a photographer shares a shoot online and the client marks which photos they want, producing a locked, downloadable approved set for editing, albums and delivery.
Is photo selection software the same as culling software?
No. Culling software ranks and filters files on the photographer's computer; selection software collects the client's decision in a shared gallery. They solve different halves of the workflow.
Do clients need an account to use it?
In Smart Photo Selection, no — the gallery link opens in any browser and clients mark, filter and submit without signing up.
Can guests use the same system?
Yes. Guests use face scan on the same gallery link to pull their own photos, without affecting the client's selection.
What comes after selection?
Editing, delivery and album design — all working from the submitted set rather than from message threads.
