AI Wedding Album Design: The Complete Guide
AI album design takes the slowest part of album work, placing hundreds of photos into balanced spreads, and turns it into a first draft you review and refine. This guide explains what the AI actually decides, what it should never decide for you, and how to go from a client's selection to print-ready sheets without losing the craft.

What “AI album design” actually means
The phrase covers very different tools. Some products simply drop photos into a fixed grid. Others generate artwork or alter faces. A useful album tool sits in between: it analyses your photographs (sharpness, exposure, faces, orientation, colour, near-duplicates) and designs the layout from that analysis, while leaving the content of each photograph untouched.
In Smart Photo Selection, the AI album generator works this way. It picks a hero photo per sheet, sizes supporting and detail photos around it, crops with faces kept inside the frame, and builds the background from the photos' own colours. It does not repaint people, invent scenery or add stock images. Every sheet it produces is a normal layered document you can open in the album editor.
Why AI layout helps wedding albums in particular
Wedding albums combine two hard constraints: a large number of photos and a strict physical format. A typical album has many spreads, each folded in the middle, each needing a clear focal point. Doing this by hand means hundreds of small decisions about which frame leads, how big each photo should be and where the fold falls. Those decisions follow patterns, and patterns are where software helps most.
- Hierarchy: one strong image per sheet, the rest sized by importance instead of split evenly.
- Variety: consecutive sheets should not repeat the same arrangement.
- Orientation matching: portrait photos in tall frames, landscapes in wide ones, nothing stretched.
- Fold safety: faces and text kept away from the binding.
- Resolution checks: catching photos that will print soft at their final size.

The workflow, from selection to print
1. Start from a finished selection
Album design goes faster when the selection is settled first. If the couple chooses their favourites through an online gallery, as with Smart Photo Selection's photo selection, the album starts from that approved set instead of the whole shoot. Smart Photo Selection reads photos directly from the booking gallery, so there is nothing to re-upload.
2. Choose the album size
Size changes the layout, not just the scale. A 12 × 36 in spread has a 3 : 1 ratio; a 14 × 40 in spread is relatively taller. Smart Photo Selection lays each design out natively for 12 × 36, 14 × 40 or a custom size, rather than stretching one design to fit another. If you are still deciding, read 12 × 36 vs 14 × 40.
3. Let the AI shortlist, then correct it
The AI selection step scores sharpness, exposure, faces and duplicates and proposes a set for the album. Use it as a filter, not a verdict: add the quiet moments the couple loved, remove near-identical frames, and move key photos earlier or later in the order.
4. Pick a template or automatic design
You can fill one of the 400+ wedding album templates or let the generator compose freely. Templates suit studios with a house style; automatic design suits albums where variety matters more than consistency.
5. Generate, review and regenerate
Generation produces editable sheets. Review them in order, as a client would, and regenerate any sheet that does not work. Regenerating uses a new seed, so you get a genuinely different composition rather than the same layout shuffled.
6. Refine in the editor
Open individual sheets to swap photos, adjust crops, add text or apply colour corrections. The editing guide for AI layouts walks through the common fixes.
7. Check print details and export
Turn on the print guides, check flagged photos, confirm the fold and export each sheet as JPG, PNG or a layered PSD. The bleed, safe area and centre fold article explains what to look for.
Design principles the AI follows (and you should too)
Hierarchy beats symmetry
Evenly sized grids look tidy but tell no story. A spread reads better when one image clearly leads and the others support it. That is why the generator gives the strongest photo the largest area and why how many photos per spread matters: the more photos you add, the weaker any single one becomes.
Balance across the fold
Every spread is two pages joined at the binding. Smart Photo Selection splits the photos between the two pages (for example 3 + 4 for a seven-photo spread) and enforces a fold-safe zone of 0.125 in on each side of the centre line: photos and text are never placed across it, and export is blocked if something still crosses. See how to keep faces off the centre fold.
Exposures and blends, used sparingly
Many templates include a large artistic portrait exposure with soft, painted edges, and the generator can build double and triple exposure blends. These work best as openers and chapter breaks. Our double exposure ideas cover which photos pair well.

Colour that comes from the photos
Backgrounds sampled from the selection keep each spread in the wedding's own palette. Colour grading belongs to the photos themselves; choosing a colour grading style explains how to keep it consistent from the first spread to the last.
What AI should not decide
- The story. Which moments matter to this couple is not visible in pixels. Reorder freely.
- Retouching. Skin, stray hairs and distractions are editorial choices; see natural skin retouching.
- Cultural sequence. In an Indian wedding the order of haldi, mehndi, sangeet and pheras matters. Our Indian wedding album ideas help with pacing.
- Final print approval. Only you can check against your lab's specification.
AI generator, templates or your own PSD?
| Approach | Best for | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| AI generator (automatic design) | Variety, fast first drafts, mixed photo sets | Selection, photos per sheet, size, regenerate per sheet |
| System templates (400+ in 20 composition families plus earlier collections) | A consistent look; picking a style such as Luxury or Floral | Template choice, photo count, size |
| Your own PSD templates | Studios with an established house design | Slot verification, photo order, fill mode |
If your studio already owns layered album designs, upload them as PSD templates; the slots are detected, you confirm them, and photos are mapped in shooting order. Read more about PSD album automation.
Files, formats and print
Smart Photo Selection exports each sheet at full size from the original photos, as JPG, PNG or a layered PSD. There is no CMYK conversion; most album labs accept RGB files and convert them themselves, but always confirm. The file format comparison explains when each format makes sense.
Delivering the album to the client
Album drafts stay in Album Studio on your device; they are not shared online. Clients review exported sheets you send them, you revise, and then you send final files to the lab. The album delivery workflow lays out a revision process that keeps rounds short.
A realistic checklist
- Selection approved by the client.
- Album size and resolution confirmed with the lab.
- AI shortlist reviewed; key moments in the right order.
- Each sheet reviewed; weak ones regenerated or edited.
- No photo flagged below 200 ppi at its printed size, or a conscious decision to accept it.
- Faces and text clear of the fold; print guides checked.
- Exported files opened and checked at 100 % before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does AI album design change the people in my photos?
Not in Smart Photo Selection. Photos are cropped, masked, layered and colour-matched as a whole, but faces and bodies stay exactly as photographed. Any retouching is something you apply yourself in the editor.
How long does an AI album take?
It depends on the number of photos, the album size and your device, since generation runs in the browser. Plan your time around review: checking and refining the sheets is where your attention matters most.
Can I mix AI sheets and template sheets in one album?
Every sheet is an editable document, so you can rework any sheet in the editor or start a new sheet from a template within the same project.
Is an AI-designed album print-ready?
Treat it as a draft. Check the resolution warnings, the fold and your lab's specification before ordering. The print preparation guide has the steps.
Where are my album projects stored?
In your browser's storage on the device you use. They are not synced to other devices, so keep exported files as your backup.
